Durr\u00ebs is the city with the greatest economic activity after Tirana, but rapid and uncritical urbanization has created a series of problems that hinder sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n

General information<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Geographical Area: The Municipality of Durr\u00ebs is bordered to the west by the Adriatic Sea, to the north by the municipality of Kurbin, to the east by the municipalities of Kruj\u00eb, Vor\u00eb and Shijak, and to the south by the municipality of Kavaj\u00eb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Population: According to the 2011 census, 175,110 people live in the territory of the new municipality of Durr\u00ebs, while according to the civil registry, the resident population is 299,989 people. With an area of \u200b\u200b338.30 square kilometers, the population density according to the 2011 Census data is 517 inhabitants km<\/span>2<\/span>\u00a0while according to the Civil Registry it is 680 inhabitants km<\/span>2<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This municipality consists of six administrative units, which are: Durr\u00ebs, Sukthi, Ishmi, Katundi i Ri, Rrashbulli and Man\u00ebz.<\/span><\/p>\n

Municipality Profile<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The municipality of Durr\u00ebs extends along the sea coast, from the mouth of the Ish\u00ebm River in the north to the border with Kavaja in the south. The long coastline that is added to the city of Durr\u00ebs emphasizes the feature of this municipality as a tourist area, since in addition to the Durr\u00ebs beach, it also includes the entire Lal\u00ebz Bay and Cape Rodonit, which until now have been part of the municipalities of Ish\u00ebm, Sukth, Katund i Ri and Rrashbull.<\/span><\/p>\n

Durr\u00ebs also has the largest port in Albania, where over 90 percent of the entire port loading and unloading volume is processed, making it the most important commercial hub in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the convenience of the port, Durr\u00ebs has also developed as an important manufacturing city, while the lure of tourism has caused a boom in the construction sector over the past two decades. Durr\u00ebs is an area with a high rate of internal migration, which has led to rapid and informal expansion of the city in the former K\u00ebneta area and along the coastline to the south of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Durr\u00ebs is also an important archaeological site, as several layers of ancient civilizations lie beneath the current city. Archaeological discoveries are numerous, while construction in recent decades has damaged part of this heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

With over 5,600 economic activities and 15% of foreign investments, Durr\u00ebs is ranked second as the country's strongest economy, after Tirana.<\/span><\/p>\n

Me mbi 750.000 vizitor\u00eb n\u00eb vit, kjo \u00ebsht\u00eb zona m\u00eb e r\u00ebnd\u00ebsishme e vendit n\u00eb lidhje me turizmin masiv. Sipas Zyr\u00ebs Rajonale t\u00eb Pun\u00ebs t\u00eb Durr\u00ebsit, forcat aktive p\u00ebr t\u00eb punuar llogariten rreth 54,000 njer\u00ebz. Niveli i t\u00eb papun\u00ebve p\u00ebr rrethin e Durr\u00ebsit shkon n\u00eb rreth 10,38%, ku papun\u00ebsia \u00ebsht\u00eb m\u00eb e p\u00ebrhapur te femrat. Sektori privat ka pun\u00ebsuar rreth 31,3%, i ndjekur nga sektori bujq\u00ebsor privat me 36,7%, dhe sektori shtet\u00ebror me 21.3%.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rapid urbanization has created serious problems with the encroachment of green spaces and damage to the archaeological heritage of the city of Durr\u00ebs, while the rapid urbanization of the coastline has caused an overload of public services and difficulties in developing the necessary infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Durr\u00ebs is one of the most problematic areas regarding water supply, because the current water sources are limited and located at a considerable distance, while the new municipality does not have other nearby clean sources to increase the water supply.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unregulated constructions have overloaded the existing urban infrastructure, such as wastewater sewers, roads, and public parking, and also threaten to harm the city\u2019s future as a tourist destination.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the overload of the current urban area with constructions, the expansion of the municipality to include the communes along the coastline creates an additional challenge, as the Lalzi Bay area has also begun to face construction pressures, both authorized and unauthorized.<\/span><\/p>\n

Balancing the need for tourism development with the need to preserve a clean environment and turning tourism into a sustainable activity is the main challenge of the new municipality.<\/span><\/p>\n

The construction of necessary infrastructure in urbanized areas over the last two decades, as well as the building of wastewater treatment plants to prevent coastal pollution, are considered challenges of particular importance.<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent years, road connections to the outskirts of the city of Durr\u00ebs have been established, which are still insufficient to handle the traffic flow.<\/span><\/p>\n

The connection of the constituent villages of the new municipality to the city of Durr\u00ebs through public transport is a solution that serves both tourism and the residents themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Extending waste collection services throughout the territory of the new municipality is essential, especially because part of the coastline, such as Rodoni Cape, is littered with plastic waste carried by rivers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The development of agriculture in the rural areas surrounding the current municipality is an opportunity, particularly regarding specialized food products for the tourism market.<\/span><\/p>\n
