Within the framework of sustainable urban development and climate-oriented policies, significant initiatives aimed at improving urban mobility continue to emerge across the ADRION area. As of 1 January 2025, the City of Belgrade has introduced free public transport following a decision adopted by the city administration, marking an important step toward more sustainable and accessible mobility systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measure has been designed to support Sustainable Urban Mobility objectives by encouraging citizens to shift from private car use to public transport. By removing ticket costs, the initiative seeks to reduce traffic congestion, limit the number of vehicles circulating in the city, and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Early expectations highlight improvements in traffic flow as well as environmental benefits linked to decreased air pollution levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Belgrade is not directly involved as a partner in the TERRAIN IPA ADRION project, the initiative holds particular relevance within the broader territorial context of the programme. The city is geographically and functionally connected to Pan\u010devo, one of the project partners, reinforcing the importance of coordinated mobility policies and sustainable planning approaches across interconnected urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Policy developments such as this further confirm the relevance and timeliness of the TERRAIN IPA ADRION project<\/strong>, which promotes sustainable territorial planning and environmentally responsible regional development. By fostering integrated solutions and supporting climate-oriented strategies, TERRAIN contributes to strengthening resilience and sustainability across participating regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar approach has already demonstrated positive outcomes at the national level in Luxembourg, which in 2020 became the first country worldwide to introduce free public transport as both a social and environmental measure. The initiative encouraged wider use of buses, trams, and trains while contributing to emission reduction efforts and improving accessibility for citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
